Senator Jerry Moran Against Mid-Decade Redistricting: “We have a practice…that makes sense to me.”
TOPEKA — Kansas Senator Jerry Moran wants state lawmakers to reconsider a mid-decade effort to redraw congressional districts.
Speaking with KMUW, Senator Moran said, “There’s a bit of fairness that I think ought to be preserved about this issue, and we have a practice that we’ve utilized for a long period of time.”
As required by the Kansas Constitution, state lawmakers have long revisited the boundaries of congressional districts every ten years following the completion of the Census. After a nationwide push to redraw these districts before the 2026 midterms, voters across the country are voicing their concerns—including here in Kansas.
The Kansas Fair Maps Coalition, Kansas Common Sense Fund, and other organizations gathered this fall to amplify constituent voices, who loudly said “no new maps.” Voters are worried their ability to select their elected officials will be cut off if politicians can pick their voters first.
Senator Moran agrees, saying “We reapportion at that Census moment, and that makes sense to me.”
Kansans are asking their representatives to address affordability, access to healthcare, and tax relief. Moving congressional district boundaries is the lowest priority for Kansas voters.
