‘No New Maps!’: Kansans Flood Lawmakers with Petitions, Postcards Opposing Mid-Decade Redistricting Scheme

TOPEKA — The Kansas Fair Maps Coalition collected over 3,400 signatures, postcards, and emails from Kansas citizens urging lawmakers to stop their redistricting push and honor the current congressional maps. Kansans from every Senate district, and nearly every House district, have taken action in fear that redrawing the maps will divide their communities, silence their voices, and cause elected representatives to listen less to Kansans.

“Our elected officials’ job is to listen to us and try to make life better for families. When districts are manipulated and gerrymandered, officials listen less to voters and more to special interest groups,” Laurel Burchfield, Advocacy Director, Mainstream Coalition, said. “By coming together and making our voices heard, we can make sure our leaders know that we oppose this plan to rig the system. We say no to mid-decade changes and NO NEW MAPS.”

The strong public opposition comes as a result of an unprecedented push by political leaders for a special legislative session to redistrict Kansas mid-decade. At Kansas Fair Maps events and beyond, Kansans and community leaders have voiced concerns about efforts to redraw the congressional maps.

Business leaders in Johnson County and other communities have publicly opposed the redistricting plan by Republican leaders. The Overland Park Chamber of Commerce released a special statement in opposition to splitting up their county. Additionally, the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce and the Civic Council of Greater Kansas City oppose the effort to redraw congressional districts.

In mid-October, Kansas Fair Maps and its coalition partners rallied in Johnson County with 250 local citizens who opposed this gerrymandering scheme. They will continue engaging voters, educating communities, and standing up for fair representation for every Kansan.

Recent coverage highlights this widespread opposition to new maps:

Background:

In July 2025, President Donald Trump requested that Republican-controlled states redraw their congressional boundaries to maximize the number of Republican-dominated districts. According to Kansas Public Radio, Kansas Republicans are circulating a petition to call a special session to move forward with redistricting.

The last redistricting fight took place in 2022, after the 2020 Census was conducted, which follows the standard process Kansas uses each decade. That year, they split the city of Lawrence and Wyandotte County, while keeping Johnson County within one district.

This year, Republican leaders have discussed splitting up Johnson County into two or more congressional districts.
